Kids – Poster Contest for Constitution Day

September 17 is recognized as Constitution Day. We’ve heard of a contest that is available to kids in K-12 grades that is Internet based. This second annual GovDoc Kids Group U.S. Constitution Day Poster Contest information can be found at http://www.constitutionfacts.com/

Entries must be postmarked by October 1, 2010.

We’re celebrating the pen in 2010

This year’s theme for the Brown County Fair was Rockin’ the pen in 2010. Of course those of us at the Library immediately thought of a writing pen! The library staff decided to have an entry in the Fair Parade so we could remind everyone to support their local libraries in Horton, Hiawatha and Everest. Plus, get the word out about all the different services we have to offer!

Water Balloons, Bubbles and Fun!

A party for the participants in the Summer Library Program was held on June 29 on the library grounds. Kids had fun getting wet while playing water balloon toss and splashing through the pool. A beach ball relay, water balloon hot potato game, musical beach ball game and a bubble blowing contest filled out the outdoor activities. Then it was snack time and inside for awards presentation and prize giveaways. Everyone had a great time making a SPLASH @ the Library.

Summer Reading Party June 29

Everyone should plan to Make a Splash at the Library next Tuesday, June 29 when we gather for the party to end the Summer Library program. Plan on getting wet, so wear swim attire if you can and bring a towel and beach shoes! We’ll have snacks and some water fun outside (weather permitting) and gather inside for awards and presentation of prizes. The party starts at 10:00! Don’t forget to turn in your reading logs by this Saturday, June 26!

Craft Day at the Library – June 22

The Summer Reading Program activities came to a close on June 22 with a Craft Day at the Library. Paige Gasper and our guest helper, Haley Wellman, rounded up the Pre-K, Kindergarten and 1st graders upstairs for a story time, games and making boats for outside play.

The kids going into 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades gathered in the basement to make shark hats with the help of Brenda Honea and guest helpers Brittany Honea and Sue McAllaster. Below they are just getting started.

And here’s the finished work – many colorful sharks in the mix.

Our group of kids going into 5th grade and beyond had their work cut out for them making tote bags and boxes out of recycled magazines. Their colorful creations looked great!

Here they are almost finished with a little over an hour of weaving, taping and cutting to make their creations.

The Garbage Clown was at the Library

With the emphasis on water this summer, one thinks about conservation and ways to save this precious resource. On June 15, the Library invited Richard Renner, one of America’s beloved clowns to entertain the kids with his REcycle, REuse and REduce garbage man show. Complete with his own REcycling machine, he spoke to all about ways to recycle and reuse common ordinary things and the importance of making a difference in our environment. The kids had a great time listening to his silly jokes and seeing some magic tricks. They even invited him to come back again!

Water Magic was in the Air

A fun day was had at the library on Tuesday, June 8, when Dale Huffman from Lee’s Summit, MO provided ooohs and aaahs for the 65 folks who came to see him perform some great magic tricks!

Summer Reading Kicks Off with Musical Program

June 1 – the Horton Public Library Summer Program kicked off with a musical program Make a Big splash with Music brought to us by Aaron Fowler from Wichita, KS. Aaron had a fun, interactive program with a great group of kids who came to start their summer fun at the library!
